$11,000 to replace two heritage plaques in Yorkville
Visitors to Yorkville’s Town Hall Square at 18 Yorkville Ave. should soon see a shiny new pair of enamel heritage plaques replacing the current metal ones.
On Sept. 30, city council voted to cover the $11,000 cost of replacing the plaques, by increasing Heritage Toronto’s 2015 operating budget using Section 45 community benefits.
“There was a request from the residents in the area,” Ward 27 Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam said. “These older plaques do get damaged after being subjected to the four seasons for a number of years, and it’s not uncommon for us to take some money and try to refurbish them, or if we can’t, to replace them.”
In the case of Town Hall Square, the stainless steel design of the current plaques is no longer used by Heritage Toronto, with the organization now exclusively using enamel, which allows the plaques to incorporate colour photographs, Wong-Tam said,
For Town Hall Square, these could include pictures of the former town of Yorkville’s town hall, a three-storey yellow brick Victorian building that was finished in 1860 and destroyed by a fire in 1941.
The installation date for the new Town Hall Square plaques is unknown.
