45 cars vandalized in Cabbagetown area—and counting

At least 45 vehicles have been vandalized in the Cabbagetown area over the past six weeks, Toronto police say.

51 Division “wants to make the public aware of numerous acts of vandalism in Cabbagetown,” numbering 43, according to a police press release on Feb. 14.

By the next day, police were saying on Twitter the count had risen to 45.

The reported damage includes broken windows, cut tires and paint applied to vehicles.

The incidents have occurred in the evening/overnight hours and on no particular day of the week, police said in the press release.

However, a graphic on the Toronto police Twitter feed on Feb. 15 shows 14 incidents, almost a third of the total number since Jan. 1, taking place on Tuesdays.

Concentrations are shown in the neighbourhoods designated by police as Cabbagetown-South St. Jamestown and Moss Park.

Cabbagetown and Moss Park residents have been complaining about vandalism to vehicles in the area since January.

Police asked residents to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity in their neighbourhood.

They are also asking that home owners review their security equipment and forward to police anything suspicious that may assist investigators to identify anyone responsible for these crimes.
