Two charged with murder in Yonge Street stabbing

Arrests came days after killing, thanks to 'very helpful' witnesses, police say

Two men have been arrested within two days of each other after a fatal stabbing on Yonge Street.

Simon Zerezghi, 25, of no fixed address died on Jan. 29 after multiple men chased him south on Yonge and stabbed him in the chest, police said.

Police responding to a radio call shortly after 8 p.m. found Zerezghi on Yonge, just south of Wellesley Street. He was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Numerous witnesses contacted investigators and were “very helpful with the investigation,” police said.

On Feb. 1 homicide investigators arrested Colin Defreitas, 25, and on Feb. 3 they arrested James Craig, 32.

Both face charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder. Defreitas also faces a charge of failing to comply with recognizance.
