Ten years of physio celebrated on Eglinton

Ten years ago the Town  Crier carried a story about a new clinic opening on Eglinton Avenue East.

Third-year chiropractic student Godrej Engineer had been working at a Physiomed at Yorkdale when the opportunity came for him and a partner to open a Leaside location in conjunction with a gym, Pure Fitness. The partners were pictured in the community newspaper working out in the gym.

A decade later, Dr. Engineer remains as the sole owner of the Leaside clinic.

But Physiomed Leaside has expanded by every other yardstick.

“We started with 10 patients and we’ve grown to more than 1,000,” Engineer says.

Physiomed - Leaside anniversary
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY: Councillor Jon Burnside congratulates Physiomed owner Godrej Engineer for having been in business at 939 Eglinton Ave. E. for 10 years. The clinic’s birthday was marked by clients who visited throughout the day.

For the first six months the only staff were the two partners, but now there are “19 or 20” employees, he says.

The clinic offers expertise in a wide range of health services, making it a one-stop service for clients who may need a variety of treatments.

“The secret of our growth is we give the personal touch,” Engineer says. They are not content to just treat the immediate problem but want to motivate clients to make healthy lifestyle changes.

The clinic also stays involved in the local area. “Every year we try to do a community event,” Engineer says.

It also helps to have a partnership with a 40,000-square-foot gym.

For the biggest obstacle he faces in treating patients is getting them to exercise.

“People don’t have a lot of time, maybe more so in this area,” Engineer says. “Everyone is on the go, they don’t always have time for treatments, so getting them in three times a week is difficult.

“But we manage it quite well.”

He’s managed it so well that he’s opened another Physiomed in Sherway.
