Deer Park

The intersection of Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue marks the southern end of Deer Park, which stretches to the east and west to Mt. Pleasant and Avenue roads respectively. The intersection is a commercial center featuring several office buildings as well as a series of shops, services and restaurants. The area is served by the St. Clair subway station and is also home to the terminus of the 512 St. Clair streetcar.

Deer Park is one of Toronto’s oldest neighbourhoods, the name itself dating back to 1837 when the then-rural area belonged to the Heath family. By the mid 19th century, Deer Park was home to a school, a hotel and a racetrack. The city of Toronto annexed the neighbourhood in 1908 and it quickly grew into an upper middle-class residential area.

The neighbourhood has been home to several famous figured throughout the years, including pianist Glen Gould and writer Farley Mowatt.

An interesting feature of the neighbourhood is the 10-acre St. Michael’s Cemetery, one of Toronto’s oldest. The cemetery is bordered on all sides by the backs of houses, enclosing the historic place and making it virtually invisible from the streets outside.

You can get Deer Park news from Streeter online by neighbourhood or via the Central Toronto edition. Residents also receive the Central Toronto print edition of Streeter.
