Old East York

Central East York is the community that lies just north of Danforth Avenue between Pape and Woodbine avenues, and south of O’Connor Drive. Originally a working-to-middle-class area populated mostly by people of British decent, today Central East York is diversifying culturally and gentrifying economically.

Many of the bungalow-style houses are now adding second storeys and higher-end shops are slowly replacing the shops here. The neighbourhood is gaining in profile also because of its close proximity to downtown Toronto (a quick trip via the nearby Bloor Viaduct or Blood-Danforth subway line) and because of the attention brought to the surrounding neighbourhoods by the annual Taste of The Danforth food and culture festival.

Though the neighbourhood is mostly residential, it is very urban as well, with many business and cultural facilities especially along Coxwell Avenue, which bisects the area. Even within these few city blocks residents have ready access to several schools, recreation centers, cheaper and higher-end restaurants, cafés, shops and even a hospital.

You can get specifically Old East York news from Streeter online by neighbourhood or via the Riverdale-East York edition.
