Police are investigating the death of a man who fell down a garbage chute on Tuesday evening as suspicious.
The 30-year-old man died after falling from the ninth floor at a highrise building at 140 Erskine Ave., west of Mt. Pleasant Road.
Firefighters were called to the site around 10 p.m. on March 27. They found the man near the bottom of the building’s chute where garbage is compacted. He was extricated and found to have no vital signs. He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The man’s identity has not been released.
The garbage room where the chute is located on the ninth floor is locked and blocked with police tape.
Notes on the building’s garbage room doors from Homestead Land Holdings say, “Please be advised that the garbage chutes and compactor room will be closed until further notice due to an emergency.” Residents are asked to dispose of their garbage in bins at the back of the building.
The chutes at a neighbouring highrise are reportedly similar to those at 140 Erskine. They appear to be about 18 inches wide.
Toronto police say they are investigating the fatality as a suspicious death but do not suspect foul play. An autopsy is being performed.
