Want speed humps on Falcon? Tell city staff, councillor says

Residents of Falcon Street who have long sought speed bumps to to discourage drivers from barrelling through their quiet, one-block neighbourhood could soon find their prayers answered.

On April 5, the Toronto and East York community council asked city staff to poll residents on Falcon about whether traffic-calming measures are warranted.

“If the poll comes back to the city, and it’s clear that speed humps along Falcon are supported by the residents of the street, they’ll have my support,” Ward 22 councillor Josh Matlow says.

Though city staff haven’t yet told Matlow when the poll will be conducted, he says residents have been complaining for years about drivers speeding through Falcon Road, which is lined with a mix of single-family detached and semi-detached houses.

Falcon Road lies east of Mount Pleasant Road, and runs from Eglinton Avenue East in the north to Soudan Avenue in the south.

“The 85th percentile of cars are meant to be going at 50 kilometres an hour,” he said. “In the case of Falcon it’s about 46 kilometres an hour. So that’s a technical fail, but it’s still very high.”

City staff will conduct the survey independently before reporting back to his office, Matlow says.
