Elderly man killed in fire on 13th floor of East York highrise

Investigators seeking cause of fire contained to one apartment

A man in his 70s has died after being pulled from a highrise apartment fire on Strathmore Boulevard, near Greenwood and Danforth avenues, early this morning.

The man was brought down by elevator from the 13th floor of Greenwood Towers, with CPR being performed on him, and initial tweets by Toronto Fire Services referred to him as being rescued.

However, he was later pronounced dead, said public information officer Capt. Michael Westwood.

Firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire at 3:35 a.m. and had the fire extinguished by 3:56 a.m. The fire was contained to one unit on the second-from-the-top storey, although smoke migrated into other areas, Westwood said.

The fire department’s investigative division is on the scene, seeking to uncover the origins, cause and circumstances of the fire.

Greenwood Towers at 145 Strathmore Blvd. is a 14-storey residential building of public housing.
