Designer finds a new niche

After 25 years as an interior decorator, Yonge and Summerhill resident Holly Dyment is only a few months in to her newest venture, having released her new jewellery line, Holly Dyment Fine Jewelry last fall. And already a piece from the collection has made the Canadian fashion magazine pages — check out the March edition of Elle Canada and you’ll see a huge cocktail ring of amethyst and coral set in 18 carat yellow gold gleaming out of page 50.

Like the bright purple room with lime green accents she once designed, Dyment’s bling incorporates unexpected colour combinations like orange and hot pink and purple and orange.

“It’s the way I decorate,” Dyment says.

“It’s fabric but it’s jewels.”

Available at Artworks Gallery at 181 Avenue Road or by appointment through [url=http://www.hollydyment.com]her website[/url], the fine jewellery collection is comprised of precious and semi-precious stones and 18-carat gold.

Though her use of colour has carried over from her decorating days and influenced her jewellery design, Dyment says creating jewellery is in some ways easier than creating rooms.

She loves jewellery design, she says, as it’s more controllable.

“The client doesn’t come in and put a bad picture up.”

Interior decorating, she says, is completely over for her as she’s now obsessed with jewellery.

Dyment travels to India regularly to source the gems and stones used in the pieces, working with an eighth-generation Jaiper-based jeweller who cuts the stones and designs the pieces to her specifications.

The collection features earrings, necklaces, pendants and rings, yet Dyment admits it’s cocktail rings that she has a definite thing for.
For one, you can see and enjoy them easier than other types of jewellery.

“You can see where you put your money,” she says.

Her personal favourites from the collection are the orange hues of the mandarin garnets.

“They’re like orange Jell-O.”
