Stepping it up for a good cause
Physiomed Leaside is holding its second annual shoe drive Saturday, June 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside its 939 Eglinton Ave. East clinic.
People are invited to bring a pair of gently worn runners, which will be donated to a local Salvation Army chapter, and receive a discount off a pair of Saucony runners.
“We’ve always been into doing community events,” says Godrej Engineer, director and co-owner of the Leaside clinic.
They did a similar event last year as a pilot project and he says he hopes to build on it.
Engineer says he got the idea when he saw a bin where people could donate their used shoes in a local Running Room.
“There’s a lot of runners in the area,” he says.
Physiomed offers rehabilitation and medical services like chiropractic care, physiotherapy, registered massage therapy and custom orthotics.
Representatives from various companies will be on hand to give out information on foot-related topics like compression stockings and orthotics.
“We make it a foot focus day.”
If you’re not certain whether your old sneakers are too worn, Engineer suggests doing the shelf test, where you stand your runners on a shelf and look at them from behind.
If the bottom of the shoe is flat, it’s in good shape, but if it’s rounded, then it’s too worn.
