Team brings a new Trove to Danforth

Ten years ago Carolyn Eby and her mom Barbara Scriver, a retired principal, decided to go into business together and open an accessories, clothing and footwear boutique named Trove.

“When I was going to university I worked in retail and really loved it and when it came down to moving in a different professional direction I was like, ‘No, you know what? This is what I want to do. I want to do retail,’ ” Eby says. “We both have a strong arts background, which we try to bring to the collections that we offer our customers.”

As they ring in the milestone at their original location on the corner of Bloor and Bathurst streets, they are also celebrating the launch of a new location on Danforth Avenue at Chester.

“We look for communities that are very strong and have strong identities and also for people that we feel would appreciate what we have to offer,” she says, adding they also have a store in Bloor West Village. “We’re kind of the counterculture to a mall experience.”

Although all three locations have some overlapping stock, they also select goods unique to each store to best suit the neighbourhood and what customers are asking for.

“We do feature Canadian designers, Canadian lines, handmade jewellery, artisan footwear,” Eby says. “We’re featuring some of our favourite and best lines for sure and we’re also waiting for the community to direct us and let us know what they’re interested in.”

In addition to expanding their e-store, she is also excited about their own Trove collection, featuring nine scarves.

Getting to meet people in the community has been a real highlight for Eby.

“I love customers that we’ve had for 10 years and being part of that,” she says. “I do love business. I love buying. I love the travel of it all. We travel a lot and we make sure we see as much as we can because we never know what we’re going to find.”
