Bikes lanes to curb collisions

Bicycle lanes, left turn lanes and extended parking hours are coming to St. Dennis Drive in Flemingdon Park, but will come with the removal of two lanes of traffic.

The changes, in an effort to improve pedestrian safety, were adopted by the city’s public works committee on May 14.

A 2011 study found the St. Dennis Drive and Deauville Lane intersection was the second highest on a list of the 100 most collision-prone intersections in the city for accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians.

The decision to make the changes came following a 2013 city report on how to improve pedestrian safety.

The city found the traffic flow on St. Dennis Drive at peak periods can be handled by one lane in each direction, instead of the two it currently has.

Bicycle lanes will be added from Don Mills Road to Linkwood Lane east of the Don Valley Parkway, while the pre-existing parking times on St. Dennis Drive will be expanded to allow parking any time of day. Left turn lanes will be installed at St. Dennis Drive and Deauville Lane.
