Coxwell sewer bypass underway

In December 2008, the city discovered a large crack in the Coxwell Sanitary Trunk Sewer, which carries one third of Toronto’s waste to the Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant.

The damaged area is 60 metres long, running north of O’Connor Drive and Coxwell Avenue under Barbara Crescent.

If the pipe bursts, raw sewage would flow into the Don River. The city approved a $30 million plan in March 2009 to divert the flow of sewage around the damaged section of the pipe.

The bypass will begin next to the parking lot at Taylor Creek Park, arc west through the ravine, and connect with the existing sewer line at Coxwell Boulevard and O’Connor Drive.

Once the waste is diverted, inspectors can go into the sewer and see whether the damaged pipe can be repaired.

The bypass is expected to be completed by January 2011.
