Dog put down after being trapped on subway tracks

People waiting for shuttle buses
REROUTED: TTC passengers get directed to wait for shuttle buses at Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue as subway service was shut down Tuesday afternoon while an injured dog was rescued from the tracks.

A German shepherd who got stuck on subway tracks near Davisville station yesterday, causing a two-hour service suspension, has been put down.

Animal services attempted to free Katie, a German shepherd that at about 1:45 p.m. became stuck under the electrified third rail, according to TTC spokesman Brad Ross, who at the time described its condition as “not good.”

Katie was freed just after 3:30 p.m. and was alive and breathing, but had suffered serious injuries. It was rushed to a veterinary clinic beside Davisville station for treatment, but the decision was made to euthanize her.

The news Katie had not survived circulated quickly on social media, drawing the attention of both Mayor John Tory and TTC Chair Josh Colle, who tweeted thanks to riders for patience and to workers who tried to save Katie.

Ross said Katie had wandered from its nearby home in the morning and somehow made its way into a subway tunnel where it became stuck.

Subway service was shut down for two hours Tuesday afternoon while emergency crews tried to free Katie from the tracks inside a tunnel between Davisville and St. Clair stations.

Trains were not running between Eglinton and Yonge/Bloor stations for a little over two hours after power was shut off to that stretch of the subway tracks. Service resumed at about 3:45 p.m.
