Elderly man dies after being hit by reversing car

An 82-year-old man died from injuries sustained after a car struck him near Delhi and Belgrave avenues on May 27.

The man was walking along Delhi Avenue when a 51-year-old woman driving a Toyota Matrix reversed from a private driveway, knocking him to the ground.

“He had to walk on the roadway because there was no sidewalk in that part of the neighbourhood,” said Toronto Police Traffic Services Const. Clint Stibbe.

The man was rushed to hospital and died a week later.

Area resident, Kimberley Ellis, who lives a few doors down from the intersection, was shocked when she heard the news.

“I saw an ambulance down at Delhi at the time but didn’t know what it was for,” Ellis said. “I’m surprised that we didn’t find out sooner.”

Stibbe said pedestrian collisions of a similar nature aren’t unusual.

The incident is still under investigation and no names have been released. No charges have been laid against the woman so far.
