Rumble on the Kingsway raises $56,000 for cancer

The Kingsway business community threw its best punches last month in an effort to raise money for cancer research.

The inaugural Fight to End Cancer Gala boxing event at Woodbine Racetrack on June 9 saw boxers and business owners go a few Olympic-style rounds in the ring.

The event organized by Jennifer Huggins, owner of the Kingsway Boxing Club, raised $56,000 in for the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation.

Kingsway Boxing Club senior coach Virgil Barrow won the main event when he went up against Andreas Tsagarelis, owner of Caffe Demetre in the Kingsway.

Apart from grueling training leading up to the event, all 12 fighters also worked outside the ring, raising $6,000 from their individual networks.

“We couldn’t have asked for a more successful evening,” said Huggins in a statement. “Tonight, everyone was a winner and it was a dream come true to see our community pulling together to support a great mission.”

Along with celebrity bouts, the gala event featured a gourmet dinner, entertainment and a silent auction. In a thank you letter to the community, Huggins said, based on the success of the inaugural event, she is now getting started on a 2013 event.

Fight to End Cancer is seeking fighters for next year’s card, as well as event sponsors.
