Students design new bike racks

A funky new bike rack is coming to Mount Pleasant Cemetery this summer.

On January 21, cemetery officials unveiled the winning design by Ryerson University interior design students to create visually appealing racks for the 1-square kilometre midtown green space.

The unveiling was the culmination of the students’ course project that began last fall.

Seven teams of students were selected to complete design proposals.

The winning design, which features long, curved forms set at various angles, was created by Katy Alter and Jeff Cogliati. The duo received a $3,000 cash prize.

“After our great experience with students of Royal Conservatory offering free Sunday summer concerts, we decided to tap into the creative juices of Ryerson’s design students,” said Mount Pleasant’s President and CEO said Glenn McClary in a statement.

In April, the team will set to work producing a prototype. Installation begins in the summer. More than one rack could be installed, depending on production costs for the original.
