Students protest suspension

Students at Northern Secondary School held a rally this afternoon in support of fellow student and former soccer team captain, Emil Cohen. Cohen was recently suspended for two days after he tried to deliver a speech at a school athletics assembly was deemed unacceptable by school staff.

Over 100 students, politicians and other protest groups gathered to voice their displeasure with what they perceived as the school administration’s denial of the Cohen’s right to free speech.

Only metres away, across the street, an equally sized impromptu opposition rally was held by football team members and other students. At times the two groups hurled several water bottles and fruits at each other although the protest never really got out of hand.

The rallies were held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and students returned to their classes after the lunch break was over.
