Privatizing garbage: Consider the social impact

Re: Today’s Streeter [Town Crier, Feb. 4], which asked local residents their opinions on privatizing garbage pickup

I was surprised to see how many of the good people in Leaside want to destroy the lives of their garbage men. Many have a wife and children to support, but that apparently isn’t important. Why should we pay the lowly garbage men — people at the bottom of the social ladder — a decent wage? The millionaire who gets the contract will pay minimum wages and provide no benefits, no pensions and no job security.

You should be careful what you wish for. Your turn could come next. Destroying and privatizing all government services and driving down wages for the poor and middle class have always been part of [Prime Minister Stephen] Harper’s right wing agenda.

Are greed and self interest now more important than the public good?
