Teen shot in Flemingdon Park

A teenager found with gunshot wounds near Bayview and Broadway Avenues was reportedly driven to the area after gunfire erupted in Flemingdon Park on Jan. 26.

At about 7:30 p.m. that day, a passerby discovered the 18 year old sitting in a parked car with a gunshot wound to his shoulder, Constable Wendy Drummond said.

According to police, a friend of the wounded teen drove him to the area from Flemingdon Park after shots were fired there just before 6 p.m.

“There was a group of kids … in the area of Flemingdon Park,” Drummond said. “An altercation occurred, shots were fired and people fled the area.”

Drummond said the shooting took place near Grenoble Drive and Vendome Place “in the playground area of Flemingdon Park.”

The teen was treated for his non-life threatening injuries and was later released from hospital. A day after the incident, Drummond said police were investigating.

“We’re not getting much cooperation from the victim right now,” Drummond said, adding that the teen is known to police, but only through contact and not from any major arrests or offences.

“We’re having to speak with other people who were there and (we are) trying to get a hold of video surveillance from the housing.”

Police believe the victim was with a group of about six people in the park when the altercation occurred.

Violence has been prevalent in the Flemingdon Park area for some time.

At the end of July this past summer, Dimitry Savenkov was stabbed to death as he exited an elevator in his Flemingdon Park apartment. Gun crime is nothing new to Flemingdon Park. Two weeks before Savenkov was killed, 19 year old Dianthony Evans died after being shot in the head when he was in the park with a group of friends.

Evans had also been one of six young offenders charged with the first-degree murder of 17 year old Omar Wellington, who was brutally beaten and stabbed in and near his Flemingdon Park apartment in 2006.

While Drummond could not speculate if the recent shooting was connected to any of the previous violence in the area, she did say the teen is not from Flemingdon Park and was there visiting friends.
