ARECA asks for neighbourhood traffic study
Concerned about traffic? Well a local group is doing something to tackle the issue head on. The Avenue Road Eglinton Community Association (ARECA) has asked the city to do a traffic study in the area.
"We have defined the area of the study as Avenue Rd. to Roselawn Ave. and Eglinton Ave. to Yonge," said Mike Müller, a board member with ARECA.
"It has come about due to a number of violations of (temporary) do not enter (signs) northbound at Edith Dr," he says.
How it works now is that people can’t turn at Eglinton Ave. onto Edith Dr. from 4-6 p.m., but people make turns until 4:15 p.m. and start again at 5:45 p.m., said Müller, so the street gets relief for an hour and a half.
"When the prohibitions are off, we have line-ups of traffic to the point where it is difficult to cross the street," he adds.
The other prohibition is at the north end of Oriole Parkway where there is no entry from 7-9 a.m.
The idea is to stop people from using side streets as short cuts during rush hour.
"We have been at them (police) all the time (to enforce the rules). They have been good lately at pulling over all cars (disobeying rules). That has helped a lot," he says.
"You try and create a better neighbourhood, but it becomes tougher to drive through," he says. "If main streets were working properly then we would not have spillover onto side streets," he says.
