Band keeps the beat alive
[attach]1543[/attach]Local musicians looking to share their passion for instrumental music and their joy in playing have found a home with The North Toronto Community Band.
The band, which was founded in 1998, plays from September to May, performing concerts mainly in retirement homes and hospitals. Of those who helped found the group are still active in the organization.
Although members of the band are volunteers who simply have a love for music, the conductor, Danny Wilks, is a professional trombonist, arranger and composer. Wilks not only conducts the North Toronto Community Band but also the Royal Canadian Legion Concert Band.
To raise money to keep the band going it is organizing a gala show at Crescent School on May 30 which will include a concert and a silent auction.
Made up of 40 talented musicians, the band showcases tunes from film, big band jazz, marches and solo features. The group comes together every Monday at 7:00 p.m. at Lawrence Park Collegiate and new members are always welcome.
“We are currently seeking new members particularly in brass and also clarinets,” says band president Sheelagh Lawrence.
