Break-ins, car thefts prompt tips from cops

A rash of break-ins and vehicle thefts have prompted police to release a list of tips to reduce the chance of being victimized.

Police in 53 Division, which includes much of midtown Toronto, warned on Aug. 30 the division in general has seen an increase in break and enters.

A typical theft consists of thieves breaking into a home, stealing car keys, and then stealing the vehicle.

Police suggest a number of ways to reduce your likelihood of becoming a victim of one of these thefts.

First, if you have a garage, park your car inside it, as opposed to leaving it on the driveway or street.

If you have a car alarm, make sure you use it, and also enable a tracking device if possible.

Inside your home, don’t keep your keys in plain sight, and if you’re away, lock them in a safe or cabinet.

Finally, do not keep any valuables like laptops, cellphones, cash or GPS systems inside your vehicle.
