Library branch closes for renovations

The Pape-Danforth Library is no spring chicken. It opened in 1929 and while it will be missed during a year-long closure for renovations when it reopens again next Spring it will have more to offer children, students and people with disabilities.

The library, located at 701 Pape Ave., closed on April 16 and will not open again until sometime next spring. The entire inside of the library will be gutted while it undergoes a $2-million renovation, said Anne Bailey, director of branches for the Toronto Public Library.

The second floor of the building was only accessible from stairs located outside the building, with no way to get to the second floor internally. So a new internal staircase will be erected so staff and library patrons can easily travel from one floor to another. A new elevator will also make things easier for those with disabilities.

The children’s collection, which is on the second floor, was only open during certain hours in the past but it will be accessible during all library hours when the building reopens. And from September through June the library will be open on Sundays.

Other additions will include moving the entranceway further north and creating a computer-learning space. There will also be a space created for library programs, such as the home club and ESL classes, and the community can also rent this space for meetings.

People who use this library can go to several nearby locations.

Books that have been put on hold at the Pape location can now be picked up at the Danforth Coxwell Library (416-393-7783) at 1675 Danforth Ave.
