Municipal election candidates by the numbers
Nominations are closed and thanks to a flurry of last minute registrations the number of candidates running in next month’s municipal election has exceeded the 2006 mark.
All-in-all 478 Torontonians, 22 more than during the last election, are asking for your vote for mayor, council and school board on Oct. 25.
The greatest swings in terms of candidate numbers took place among the school boards with eight fewer candidates running for the Toronto District School Board and a whopping 21 more seeking a seat at the Toronto Catholic District School Board.
It is also interesting to note that with 10 council seats (including the mayor’s chair) with no incumbent, the total number of candidates only increased by three for mayor and four for council over 2006.
A total of 45 candidates registered on the final day nominations were open, and 60 signed up in the final three days.
Number of registered candidates by office (change from 2006 in parentheses)
Mayor: 41 (+3)
Councillor: 279 (+4)
Toronto District School Board: 89 (-8)
Toronto Catholic District School Board: 59 (+21)
Conseil Scolaire de District du Centre-Sud-Ouest: 8 (+3)
Conseil Scolaire de District Catholique Centre-Sud: 2 (-1)
A final certified list of candidates will be released by the city on Sept. 13 so these numbers are subject to change.
