Pedestrians struck as car leaps Eglinton curb

A man in his 70s is facing life-threatening injuries after he was hit by a car near Eglinton and Oakwood avenues on Friday.

About 10 people were struck by a car that mounted the sidewalk in mid-afternoon, say police who were called to respond at about 2:30 p.m.

Witnesses told the Town Crier a silver sedan Lincoln rear-ended a red Range Rover SUV, then climbed the curb near the southeast corner of Eglinton Avenue West and and Oakwood, hitting several pedestrians and a man sitting on a bench. The silver sedan appeared to be trying to pass a parked white Ford van.

The elderly man was rushed to the hospital.

“His left foot got completely destroyed,” witness David Cross said.

The man, known to the community as Pat, was sitting on the bench when the silver sedan struck him.

“Pat comes here everyday, we know him and he knows us. That’s what he does, he sits on the bench and chats with people,” Cross said.

Passersby say motorists tend to speed through the interaction to catch the light.

Police have not determined the cause of the accident or announced whether charges have been laid.
