Rent abatement package secured

St. Paul’s Councillor Michael Walker (Ward 22) was instrumental in orchestrating a rent abatement package for residents at two buildings in the same area of the 88 Redpath Ave. site.

In both cases the local councillor worked out an agreement so the developer would compensate residents where new buildings were going up on the same site as their existing apartment complexes.

Just recently, Walker secured a rent abatement package for approximately half of the residents living at 88 Redpath located between Soudan and Eglington Avenues. Residents in 92 (of the 186) apartments that face west towards where a new condo apartment building will receive rent abatements of $40 a month for 10 months. This is costing the developer $36,800.

Earlier this year, Walker was able to negotiate a rent abatement package for residents at 45 Dunfield Avenue (a block away from 88 Redpath) where another building is going up at that site.

There have been cases were the Rental Housing Tribunal has awarded rent abatement packages in the past. However, according to city staff, these two rent abatement packages are thought to be the only ones to be secured as part of a development approval (prior to construction).
