Halloween’s biggest party takes over the Village

What is often called the biggest Halloween party in North America took over the Church-Wellesley Village again last night — and it may have been the biggest yet.

Thousands of costumed pedestrians took over six blocks of Church Street between Wood and Gloucester streets.

From 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., cars were banned from the area, and people — most in costumes — paraded on the street, listened to eerie music from DJs, and took part in celebrations hosted by local establishments with creepy events and strange menus.

Newly re-elected city councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, who represents the area, tweeted she was “having a ghoulishly good time on Church Street. Thank you @ChurchWellesley for hosting another fantastic #Halloween street party.”

Was there a particularly popular theme at this year’s bash? Possibly a greater prevalence of Day of the Dead costumes, the Mexican celebration that officially begins the evening Nov. 1 but has been previewed at several other venues around Toronto this year.
