Accessible bus service sought for rehab centres
The TTC could soon be adding an accessible branch to reach a series of rehabilitation hospitals north of Eglinton Avenue East and Rumsey Road.
The city’s Disability Issues Committee made the pitch to the TTC on Jan. 24, pointing out that a cluster of medical service centres — including the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, Spinal Cord Injury Association of Ontario, and the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute’s Cardiac Centre and Neuro Rehabilitation Centre — are five blocks from the nearest TTC stops on Bayview Avenue, Eglinton Avenue East, Rumsey Road and Sutherland Drive.
The subject was first broached in an October letter from committee member Terri-Lynn Langdon to TTC chair Karen Stintz.
The five blocks represent “too great of a distance for many people with disabilities to manage, especially in extreme temperatures, snow and inclement weather,” she wrote.
Committee chair Adam Vaughan said what the TTC might consider a minor reroute would in fact “go a long way towards making the lives of people with disabilities that much easier.”
“We’ve endorsed the request coming from the community, and it will be up to the TTC to respond,” he said.
