Back to school is over

Okay, life is a little less hectic now that the kids are back at school: the fancy duds have been bought, all the clubs have been joined and the supplies for those clubs have been purchased — right?

Translation: now it’s time to focus on you.

If you’re thinking of getting that haircut you’ve been putting off for the last month or so, you may want to know that longtime Leaside hair cutter Rhona McDonald and esthetician Tammy Dean have left the building — but they’ve entered another.

Formerly in an area salon for over a decade, the pair has recently decamped to Bayview Clippers, having joined owner Margaret Gray as a hair stylist and esthetician, respectively. But after two weeks they decided to buy the joint.

Gray, you see, is retiring soon. She tells me she came to Toronto 21 years ago with a train ticket and $50 in her pocket. If she didn’t get a job, she was going to return to her native Digby, Nova Scotia.

She still has that ticket stub, and she’s had the salon for 17 of those 21 years. Though she’ll stay until the new year to help the new gals transition, she’s off to run an 18th-century reenactment bed and breakfast back home.

Meanwhile McDonald and Dean, who say they’ve always wanted to go into business together, will be renovating and likely renaming the salon in January. For now, they’ve added a registered massage therapist into their mix of esthetic services.

Stay tuned for a goodbye party for Gray in December and a grand opening event in January.

If you want the feeling of a fall fair but can’t get out of the city to make it to some of the rural ones, drop by the Mount Pleasant Village Fall Fair on Sat., Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The kids can test out their Halloween costumes on unsuspecting folk as there will be treats for those in costume (I hear even the dogs will be tarted up).

You can shop at your fave Mount Pleasant strip shops and sample foodie fare too, as there will be sidewalk sales to tempt your wallet and sampling to tempt your taste buds.

Darn, you forgot some school supplies. Or maybe Johnny’s just been invited to his fifth birthday party of the month.

Well, at least you can make the gifties educational, and you can do so in a brand new environment if you hit the renovated Mastermind Toys store, which reopened the second week of September after a six-week reno.

Aside from the guts of the place being redone — all new floors, ceilings and walls — the space has been completely reconfigured to be more user-friendly, with stroller-friendly shopping aisles and a larger and more efficient checkout station with more registers and larger gift wrapping station.

There’s also an expanded book section with about 2,000 titles.

Go ahead — hit those books.
