Online raves and a prime location were not enough to keep the Kanpai Snack Bar open for more than four years.
The eatery that served Taiwanese food at the corner of Parliament and Carlton streets, in the middle of Cabbagetown, closed at the end of last year or beginning of this year.
It was reportedly shut down by the landlord for being in arrears with rent. A sign on the front of the vacated premises at 252 Carlton St. advertises “corner flagship realty” for lease.
Founded in 2015, Kanpai gained a reputation as a hip and fun food hangout that won positive reviews in newspapers and on dining websites. Patrons also reported it being packed most evenings.
However, on Dec. 19, 2019 it failed a city health inspection that cited multiple infractions, some of which “presented an immediate health hazard that cannot be corrected during an inspection.”
Previous inspections had given Kanpai a pass, despite uncovering minor infractions.
The last Instagram post from Kanpai Snack Bar was on Dec. 9.
