Community gets to sound off on development

Yonge-Eglinton residents will have an opportunity to voice their opinion on a 47-storey mixed-use condominium proposed for 55 Eglinton Ave. East at a community consultation meeting on Monday.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Northern District Library, 40 Orchard View Blvd.

The city planning department does not support the proposal by developer State Building Group. In a Jan. 30 report, planning staff outlined several issues with the current application, including the net job loss that would result from replacing the existing commercial building with a residential tower and its lack of setbacks from the property line.

Ward 22 councillor Josh Matlow said that while the proposal “is certainly tall for the location,” it isn’t dramatically different from what developers have proposed nearby. The E Condos tower, under construction across the street at 8 Eglinton Ave. East, will rise to 58 storeys.

“I want to make sure that the height is reasonable, that there are sufficient setbacks and that it fits into the site,” Matlow said. “I don’t just want another glass building. I want a building that will animate Eglinton and make it a vibrant main street.”
