March 24: Baroque oratorio for Lent

The University of St. Michael’s College presents a Baroque oratorio by Danish-German composer Dieterich Buxtehude, teacher of J.S. Bach.

The free concert of Lenten music by the Musicians In Ordinary and soloists takes place March 24, 7:30 p.m. at St. Basil’s Church, 50 St. Joseph St. at Bay Street.

The Musicians In Ordinary voices and strings, led by violinist Christopher Verrette, join forces with the St. Michael’s Schola Cantorum directed by Michael O’Connor in Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri. Soloists are sopranos Christina Haldane and Maureen Fergusson, alto Rebecca Claborn, tenor Robert Kinar and bass Peter Warren. The other instrumentalists are Rezan Onen Lapointe, violin; Matt Antal and Eleanor Verrette, viola; Felix Deak, bass violin; Matthew Whitfield, organ; and John Edwards, theorbo.

Admission is free, but donations are welcomed. Information is available by calling 416-926-7148 or visiting www.musiciansinordinary.ca.

Composed in the 1680s, Membra Jesu Nostri, comprises seven cantatas that through sections for instrumental ensemble, choir and vocal soloists describe the feet, knees, hands, sides, breast, heart, and face of the crucified body of Jesus.
