May 7: Exploring The Handmaid’s Tale as feminist dystopia

A discussion about Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale will be presented by Myra Bloom, PhD, communications instructor at the University of Toronto on May 7 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The talk is to be held at the Deer Park Library branch at 40 St. Clair Ave. E., in the 2nd floor programming room.

Although The Handmaid’s Tale was originally published in 1985, contemporary readers have embraced the book and the critically acclaimed TV adaptation as a cautionary tale for our times. For many, its dystopian world of ecological collapse, religious fundamentalism, and misogynistic policies hits all too close to home. This talk will explore the themes and techniques Atwood uses to build her feminist dystopia (in text and film), and consider how our understanding of her novel has evolved over time.
