Canada Day celebrations in East York tomorrow

Tomorrow’s the big day, as if anyone in East York has to be reminded. The east end’s 62nd Canada Day celebrations start with a parade, continue with a fun-filled day in Stan Wadlow Park and end with a spectacular fireworks display. See times and places in the Things To Do listing.

Yard sales and grill time today

It’s a busy time in the Danforth area today. From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Danforth Community Sale is hosting yard sales in the neighbourhoods north and south of the west end of Danforth Avenue to support the Danforth Strong movement and raise funds for gun control. See the listing for more information.

Then in the evening, the 10th annual Thrill of the Grill takes over Danforth from Broadview Avenue to Playter Boulevard. A $25 ticket includes all food and beverage stations. See the Things To Do listing.

DANFORTH A YEAR AGO: As the anniversary of the Danforth shooting approaches, events are being organized to support Danforth Strong.

Police release investigation of Danforth shooting

Eleven months after the Danforth shootings, investigators have failed to find a motive for the event that left three people dead and 13 wounded. Police chief Mark Saunders released a report today that outlines a history of mental health issues and assessments calling Faisal Hussain a risk for violence. But he did not seem to be motivated by ideology, racism or hatred, police found. Read the full story.

Sunscreen dispensers coming to two east-end parks

Riverdale Farm and Evergreen Brick Works are among the sites added to the Toronto’s #BeSunSafe program, which places sunscreen dispensers in parks. Today the city, working with the David Cornfield Melanoma Fund and the Douglas Wright Foundation, announced last year’s 50 sunscreen dispensers, introduced to waterfront parks, have been expanded to 75 dispensers, including non-waterfront locations.

The dispensers provide a Health Canada-approved SPF 30 broad-spectrum sunscreen. 1n 2018 it is estimated up to 94,000 Torontonians received protection.

The #BeSunSafe program website is to include a map showing the locations of the dispensers, once they are installed, expected in July.

Cyclists take over Danforth

Hundreds of cyclists of all ages turned out for the annual Bells on Danforth today, many of them calling for safer bike lanes in the area. See the full story which should appear shortly.

Police seek ID of man in break-ins, bike thefts

Yesterday police released a photo of a man wanted in their investigation of a series of break-ins and bicycle thefts across the Queens Street East area, between Broadview and Woodbine avenue. See more details and the photo.

Sustainability Fair on tomorrow

Garden@Kimbourne kicks off the 2019 growing season with its annual Party and Sustainability Fair on June 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Garden@Kimbourne is a volunteer-driven project that uses permaculture principles to grow food and share its produce among its gardeners and food banks. The fair is held at on the east lawn of Kimbourne Park United Church, 200 Wolverleigh Blvd. It includes an environmental fair with local vendors, refreshments and hands-on gardening.

This year’s gardening activity will be the creation of a new bed through sheet mulching or lasagna gardening. Participants will learn what is meant by “no-dig” gardening and help create a new area to grow the food that is shared with the Glen Rhodes Food Bank.
