Drop-off depots closed to public again

The city is closing transfer stations where residents drop off garbage and recycling — including deports at Bermondsey, Ingram and Commissioners Street — as of today.

The news came in a press release yesterday as the city takes direction from its medical officer of health.

Toronto’s solid waste management services have experienced an increasing number of COVID-19 cases among staff, according to the release.

The measure are to “ensure the safety of staff and residents, guard against any further spread and ensure Solid Waste Management Services’ staffing levels are adequate to maintain curbside waste collection,” the release said.

The number or location of confirmed COVID-19 cases was not released.

Starting April 30, the drop-off depots are to be closed to the general public, allowing only those with an existing registered account to bring in materials.

The restriction is to to last at least until the provincial stay-at-home order is lifted, at which time the city will re-assess the situation.

The depots were closed more than a year ago during the pandemic’s first wave and the first provincial lockdown, but they were reopened to the public starting May 19, 2020.

In Streeter communities, the depots affected are:

  • Bermondsey Transfer Station, 188 Bermondsey Rd., in the Don Valley area near Victoria Park Avenue and Eglinton Avenue East.
  • Commissioners Street Transfer Station, 400 Commissioners St., in the Portlands, south of Riverdale and Leslieville.
  • Ingram Transfer Station, 50 Ingram Dr., near the Glen Park area, near Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue West.
