Learn how to sponsor a refugee

Like other midtown residents, Ward 21 councillor Joe Mihevc wanted to find out how he could sponsor one of the more than four million refugees displaced from Syria.

Mihevc says he realized if he didn’t know what to do, then many of his constituents — some of whom were already calling his office, asking for advice — wouldn’t either.

And so he began collaborating with Ward 20 councillor Joe Cressy and the Ontario Council for Agencies Serving Immigrants to organize a public meeting at City Hall, scheduled for Sept. 27, to educate residents about refugee sponsorship.

The meeting will begin with a how-to presentation by Ratna Omidvar, chair of citizen-led sponsorship organization Lifeline Syria. Afterward, visitors will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from other aid organizations.

Mihevc said many organizations are working together to sponsor a refugee between their members, he said.

“There are many, many ways to think of sponsoring,” he said.

The meeting begins at 2 p.m. at City Hall council chambers.
