City moves to save Maclean House
City council has adopted two items that will begin the redevelopment of the Maclean House at 7 Austin Ter., and see a portion of the heritage-designated building demolished to make room for six new dwellings.
Under the decision, the heritage aspects of the building must remain intact. Also, portions of the building’s facade will be restored following a previous developer’s decision to rip out window frames and part of the main entrance.
Designed by Canadian architect John Lyle and built in 1910 for journalist and founder of Maclean’s Magazine John Maclean, the property was designated a heritage building in 2010.
The new building will consist of three townhouses within the original structure as well as two semi-detached dwellings and one single family detached townhouse on the east wing.
All but one of the homes will be over 275 square metres and priced in the $2 million range. Matthew Garnet, a partner at Renaissance Fine Homes, the site’s new developer, said he hopes construction can begin by August.
