Cops able to confiscate handgun while investigating a robbery
[attach]6684[/attach]Police managed to take a loaded gun off the streets in Lawrence Heights while investigating an earlier robbery.
In a news release, police said members of the TAVIS unit were patrolling the Ranee Avenue and Varna Drive area just before 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 12 after reports of a robbery near Dufferin and the 401.
Officers allege they investigated three men, one of whom was in possession of a loaded .380 semi-automatic pistol. A 20-year-old Toronto man, Samatar Jinje was arrested and charged with possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition, possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
According to the police major reports, the earlier robbery that was being investigated had occurred around 6:30 p.m. the same day.
Police allege three men approached a 17-year-old near Dufferin Street and the 401 and started a conversation. The suspects then allegedly demanded the victim’s cellphone, which the victim then handed over. The suspects fled the scene.
January a busy month for break-and-enters
Throughout much of January, homes throughout the northern part of Toronto were being hit in break-and-enters.
On Jan. 21, a resident on Glencairn Avenue reported that a MacBook, camera and jewellery were taken after someone broke in through a door. Similarly, cash, jewellery and a computer were taken after someone broke in through a door on Glenforest Road on Jan. 15. The day before that, a home on Lawrence Avenue W. was broken into, with cameras being taken in that case. Both computer and audio visual equipment were taken from a residence on Ravenhill Road sometime between Jan. 11 and Jan. 13. And lastly, someone broke into a home on St. Germain Avenue through a door on Jan. 12 and managed to take cash, jewellery, identification and narcotics.
Man on probation charged with possession of child pornography
A Toronto man who was on probation has been arrested as part of a child pornography investigation.
According to police, the 52-year-old man was arrested following the execution of a search warrant at a home near Dufferin and Sheppard on Jan. 19. Police allegedly seized computers, CDs and DVDs.
Charged is Robert Rayner is facing one count of possession of child pornography and two counts of failure to comply with probation.
Police also mentioned in a news release that the arrest was made in conjunction with a project that has been funded by a grant from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, as well as the Ministry of the Attorney General.
Cell phone stolen during swarming
The southern edge of Lawrence Heights saw a swarming style robbery that targeted a 23-year-old man.
The victim told police he was near Lawrence Avenue W. and Allen Road at about 4:40 p.m. on Jan. 14 when six men approached him. One of the men allegedly demanded his cellphone, so he handed it over. The suspects fled the scene and the victim was not harmed
Clerk unharmed in electronics store robbery
A woman working at a store was unharmed during a robbery. Police say four men entered Radio Service Laboratory at 3307 Yonge St. just before 6 p.m. on Jan. 11, and took a television and video game console.
The suspects then fled south on Yonge.
