Green’s deputy leader to run in Beaches-East York
The Green Party of Ontario has chosen its deputy leader to run for the Beaches-East York riding in the scheduled 2022 provincial election.
The nomination of Abhijeet Manay was announced today in a party press release.
Manay has been serving as the provincial party’s deputy leader and is currently the party’s critic for health and long-term care.
In the 2018 provincial election he ran as a Green candidate in Mississauga-Streetsville, where he came in fourth, well behind the winning Conservative candidate Nina Tangri.
In 2018 he also helped on the campaign in Guelph which elected party leader Mike Schreiner as the first Green Party’s first MPP.
Today’s press release said Manay has a “deep understanding of Toronto issues, where he grew up after arriving in Canada from India at the age of 14” and is an advocate for affordable housing, small businesses and a guaranteed livable income.
Manay is employed at Reena, a non-profit that works with people with developmental disabilities where he designs and teaches courses, and he sits on the Board of Directors of the non-profit iREAM.
In Beaches-East York he’ll likely face NDP incumbent Rima Berns-McGown, if she runs for re-election, and Liberal challenger Mary Margaret McMahon, a former two-time city councillor who was nominated in November 2020.
The Conservative candidate is yet to be announced.
