Murder suspect nabbed in Summerhill

A 21-year-old man was arrested for homicide in Summerhill on Tuesday night, one hour after a man was fatally downtown.

Police were called to McGill Street near Yonge and Gerrard streets just before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night for reports of a man being stabbed.

Mark Ernsting, 39, was reportedly out for his nightly walk when another man approached and stabbed him in a robbery attempt. Ernstring was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An hour later, going on descriptions from witnesses, police tracked a suspect to an area near Yonge Street and Summerhill Avenue, where a man was arrested.

Calvin Michael Nimoh has been charged with second degree murder.

An hour before the homicide, a woman had been robbed of her purse and stabbed at Yonge and Summerhill. She suffered minor injuries and was treated in hospital.

This was the 53rd homicide in Toronto this year, and the latest in a sudden rash of murders with four people killed since the weekend.

Ernsting has been identified as a biomedical engineer with experience as a pancreatic cancer researcher, who was working for the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research at Ryerson University.
