Missing Leaside war memorial returned
The missing war memorial plaque outside Leaside Memorial Community Gardens has been remounted.
The 24-by-36-inch, 50-lb plaque, dedicated to 17 Leaside men who lost their lives in WWII, was returned to its place above the front of the newly expanded arena on Oct. 31. Weather-worn after being in place at the old arena since 1963, it had been removed for refurbishment.
“The idea was, once the new arena was built, we would remount it on the new rink,” said Allan Williams, the Leaside Gardens chair.
A rededication ceremony will take place at Leaside Gardens on Nov. 8, on the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the original plaque.
Students from nearby St. Anselm Catholic School will read the names of the 17 men the plaque is dedicated to. Relatives of the fallen Leasiders are expected to be in attendance.
Leaside Gardens opened its second rink on Oct. 5.
It is the first new rink to be built in Toronto in 50 years.
