Police warn of door-to-door charity fraud scam
A woman pretending to raise money for a charitable organization has hit several midtown neighbourhoods, police say.
Police allege the woman has been going door-to-door asking for a cash donation for a walk-a-thon in support of the Canadian Diabetes Association. The woman reportedly wears a fake identification card with the organization’s logo on it.
Once money is obtained, police say, the woman provides a receipt on the spot that doesn’t have a Canadian Diabetes Association name or logo on it.
Police are warning residents the woman is not a legitimate representative of the association, which is not currently sponsoring a walk-a-thon.
Authorities have received reports of similar fraudulent activity in The Beach, Don Mills and Davisville.
The woman is described as white, 40–50 years old, 5-foot-6 with a stocky build and long, greying hair worn in a ponytail with multiple elastics. She was last seen wearing a black jacket and black nylon pants.
