Big drug bust reveals virtual pharmacy

An east-end man is facing a slew of drug charges that police say would take an hour to go over.

Detective Constable Scott Browne of York Regional Police said that 37 year old Fabio Canto was found to be in possession of numerous drugs at the time of his arrest March 25 after being caught dealing in his Markham workplace. It was the subsequent search of his Danforth and Woodbine area home that led to an even bigger seizure.

In the home, located on West Lynn Avenue, police discovered everything from the most common recreational drugs to some obscure prescription varieties.

The search at the house also netted $120,000, a pair of brass knuckles, a taser and a switchblade.

Browne said there appeared to be no signs of any effort being put into concealing what was being kept inside the home.

“’Hidden’ is a strong term for this, it was laying about, stored,” he said. “The money was kept in little handsafes, it wasn’t secured very well.”

On top of the drugs, money and weapons, police also made two arrests at the home.

Darren Peter Casimier, a 38 year old man who is believed to be a roommate of Canto, is facing a total of 22 charges, relating to possession of drugs, weapons and cash.

The same charges were also laid on 70 year old Concettina Canto — Fabio’s mother, who also lives in the house.

Browne said it was highly unlikely Concettina was oblivious to what was going on.

“It was everywhere, it was in her fridge, she had money in her room — I doubt she was out pounding the pavement selling it or anything, but she was harbouring it if nothing else.”

In total, the three accused face a total of 82 charges.

Fabio Canto faces 32 charges related to possession of controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking, three for weapons possession, two for possession of property obtained by crime and one for trafficking.

Fabio has been held in police custody, while both Concettina Canto and Casimier have been released on bail.

The investigation is ongoing.
