JOINT UNDERTAKING: Merged funeral homes will operate out of Humphrey Funeral Home – A.W. Miles Chapel Ltd. facility at Bayview and Davisville avenues.

Two of midtown Toronto’s largest funeral homes are set to merge next month.

Humphrey Funeral Home – A.W. Miles Chapel Ltd. and Murray E. Newbigging Funeral Home said in a joint statement this week they will amalgamate operations on Aug. 15. The newly formed Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel Ltd. will operate out of Humphry’s 1403 Bayview Ave. facility.

“Major redevelopment on the Newbigging site at 733 Mt. Pleasant Rd. provided us with the opportunity to merge our firms,” said Newbigging Funeral Home president Paul Newbigging, who will stay on as past president in a semi-retired capacity. “We’ve found the principles, staff and facilities at Humphrey Funeral Home – A.W. Miles Chapel to be of the highest order.”

Newbigging’s managing director Wayne Hamilton will join Humphrey as a director.

“This is the finest example of two Toronto families working together into the future, to better serve our community at a responsible cost, and we are pleased to enter into this new chapter of our business with Newbigging’s,” said Bruce T. Humphrey, fourth generation president of Humphrey Funeral Home – A. W. Miles Chapel Ltd.

Humphrey Funeral Home – A.W. Miles Chapel Ltd., located at Bayview and Davisville avenues, has been in business for 135 years and Newbigging’s has operated on Mt. Pleasant Road for 64 years.
