Shop helps reuse old drapes

A new consignment shop at Mt. Pleasant and Davisville is could be on to something with its unusual concept.

Redrawn sells gently used soft furnishings for the home — drapes, area rugs, cushions and throws. Owner Martha MacKenzie came up with the idea while seeing similar shops in Australia.

“I thought it was a terrible idea when Martha first told me about it,” says MacKenzie’s business partner Janet Abraham. “But one night I was in someone’s house and I thought wait a minute. Where will all these beautiful things go when the home owners re-decorate?”

That was the turning point. With the opening of the shop, MacKenzie and Abraham have cornered a market that has been largely ignored in Toronto — to positive reviews from shoppers and consigners alike.

“We’ve had lots of traffic and a ton of positive feedback,” says Abraham.

Redrawn accepts items that are in good to perfect condition and works with consigners to ensure that their prices are fair. Items sold at the store come not only come from people’s living rooms but also show homes, interior designers or cancelled orders. It also stocks some new items as well.
