Civil liberties group challenges use of breathalyzer
Northern Secondary School is being accused of “unconstitutional” behaviour for planning to give breathalyzer tests to students attending the prom on May 27 at Eglinton Grand.
The Canadian Civil Liberties Association sent a letter to Northern principal Ron Felsen on May 9 asking the Mt. Pleasant Road and Eglinton Avenue East area school not to continue with its plans.
In an email, CCLA communications officer Peter Goffin told the Town Crier the association “views the breathalyzer (as) unconstitutional,” and they “respectfully request that the school revisit its position on the matter.”
The letter to the school is signed by two CCLA members, General Counsel Sukanya Pillay and public safety director Abby Deshman.
Felsen did not return calls requesting comment.
