Ward 21 councillor Joe Mihevc is asking the city to look into designating the former TTC garage at Davenport Road and Bathurst Street as a heritage site.
The Davenport garage, located just north of the TTC’s Hillcrest complex, was built in 1925, expanded in 1930, and finally closed in 1992, said Ted Wickson, a former TTC archivist. It was used to house and maintain TTC buses.
The request has now gone to the city’s planning department, asking that a report on the feasibility of designating the garage as a heritage site be sent to the Toronto Preservation Board. While there has been some talk of potentially turning the garage into a transit museum, Mihevc said the primary goal is for heritage designation so the city or TTC cannot demolish the site in the future.
“At this point we don’t have any use in mind,” Mihevc said. “We’re not trying to take it away from the TTC, this is basically a preventative move.”
