Diversity job site launched

Finding a career isn’t easy and for newcomers and diverse Canadians the task can be much harder as their skills may not be appreciated by employers.

Talentoyster.com, an on-line job board, initiated by Multimedia Nova Corporation, owners of the Town Crier, seeks to provide these Canadians with an opportunity to tackle the job market and find the career they want.

Talentoyster’s director John Sutton said that there is not enough being done to connect newcomers and employers.

“There’s a sea of possible opportunities for newcomers and diverse Canadians and we are going to help them identify their pearls,” said Sutton.

Talentoyster.com, which launched in January, gives jobseekers the option of navigating through the site in 11 languages (English, French, Punjabi, Urdu, Hindi, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Vietnamese, Arabic, Tagalog and Spanish) that reflect the mother tongues of new comers to Canada.

Sutton explained that even though skills in English or French are a requirement in the Canadian workforce, he said the ability to navigate Talentoyster in their own language creates a level of comfort with the site.

Talentoyster also uses social-networking applications such as Twitter and Facebook to send job ads and alerts to its users. A site forum used for community interaction and feedback is also the place jobseekers can commence in a live chat with recruiters.

“On Talentoyster, diverse Canadians are able to find jobs where the employer wants you to work for them,” said Sutton. “They are progressive employers that recognize the value of diverse employees.

“I think we can really help bridge the gap between the marketplace and diverse Canadians and help give them a more meaningful career.”
